Closing Trades Too Early: The Leak That Hides Inside Your Winners

Every leak that costs you money in red is easy to hate. This one pays you a small green number every time it fires, which is why it is the last habit most traders fix. You planned 3R, price wobbled at 1R, you "secured profit" — and the trade went to target without you. On the equity curve it looks like a win. In expectancy terms you just paid two-thirds of the trade to feel safe for thirty seconds.

Why the brain insists

Open profit does not feel like potential — it feels like something you already own and can now lose. That asymmetry (losses hurt roughly twice as much as equal gains feel good) means watching +1R fluctuate is genuinely more stressful than watching a flat position. Closing the trade is not a market decision; it is the fastest way to end the discomfort. The market just happens to be the venue.

The tell is simple: if your exit reason was on the chart (structure broke, the level failed, time invalidated the idea), it was a trade decision. If the reason was on your P&L ticker, it was an emotional one. Most early closes cite the chart afterward — the honest log entry written in the moment says "didn't want to give it back."

Measure it before you fight it

  • Log planned R and realized R on every winner. The gap between them, summed over a month, is the leak's invoice.
  • Replay closed winners to their original target: what would the month look like if you had simply let the plan run?
  • Segment by state: early closes cluster after losing days, near daily loss limits, and in the last hour of a session. Find your cluster.

Retraining the exit

  • Decide the management rule before entry — trail behind fractals, scale at fixed levels, or hard target. In-trade improvisation is where the habit lives.
  • If you must act, act by halves: closing 50% honors the fear without abandoning the plan.
  • Make holding the logged behavior: write "held to plan" in the journal as an explicit win, so the reward system gets something at the moment it used to get the early cash-out.
