Not a release but a liquidity condition: with one major region's banks closed, order books thin out, ranges compress, and moves that do happen can overshoot on no flow.
The practical rule is inverted from news events: nothing may happen all day, but whatever happens is less reliable. Many traders simply stand down; several firms' consistency rules make holiday P&L a poor risk anyway.
What it measures
Days when one major region's banking system is closed: US federal holidays, UK bank holidays, key European ones. Exchanges may run reduced hours while interbank FX liquidity thins.
Why the economy cares
No information content — the impact is mechanical: fewer participants, thinner order books, wider effective spreads.
How it maps onto the chart
Ranges compress and algorithmic flows dominate. Moves that do occur travel further per unit of volume and revert more often once full liquidity returns.
Price behavior around the release
Before
The prior session often front-loads position squaring, producing a mild trend into the holiday.
During
Long stretches of nothing punctuated by air-pocket moves through empty books. Stops execute with worse slippage than the chart implies.
After
The first full session back frequently retraces holiday extremes — treat holiday breakouts with suspicion until real volume confirms them.
