First-time filings for unemployment benefits — the highest-frequency read on the US labor market. Individually small, but trends of several weeks front-run the monthly employment data.
Normally a minor release; it becomes market-moving when the labor market is the narrative (as in any late-cycle or post-shock period) or when it prints far from the recent range.
What it measures
Weekly count of first-time unemployment benefit filings — the highest-frequency official labor-market series, plus continuing claims a week behind.
Why the economy cares
One week is noise; six weeks are a signal. Sustained drift above the recent range is historically one of the earliest recession tells.
How it maps onto the chart
Usually none worth trading: our measurement puts the post-release hour BELOW an ordinary 8:30 hour (~0.9x) — the market prices the trend, not the weekly print. Exception: labor-scare regimes, when a bad print can spike rate-cut odds.
