The first of three estimates of quarterly US growth — the least accurate and therefore the most market-moving. Later revisions (Prelim, Final) mostly refine it and carry less weight.
Reaction depends on the macro regime: in an inflation-focused market a hot GDP can be dollar-positive but equity-negative (higher-for-longer rates), so read it through the current narrative, not a fixed playbook.
What it measures
The Bureau of Economic Analysis' first estimate of quarterly US output growth, annualized. Two revisions follow; this one is built on incomplete data — which is exactly why it moves markets.
Why the economy cares
The broadest single scorecard of the economy. It rarely changes the next Fed meeting by itself, but it sets the growth half of the narrative every other release plugs into.
How it maps onto the chart
Regime-dependent: in a growth-scare market a beat is risk-on and dollar-mixed; in an inflation-focused market a hot print can lift USD while pressing equities (higher-for-longer). Our measurement: ~1.2x an ordinary 8:30 hour on EURUSD.
